Worcester Radio Part 3

WCRN 830 am has had a long and varied history. Starting with Christian Music, they move on to Big Band, Oldies, and now News/Talk. Located downtown across from the Common, they hired Hank Stoltz from WTAG to handle their morning drive. Recently they reunited him with his former partner Sherman Williams for the position of news person.

Worcester Radio Part 2

Here are two of Worcesters' non commercial stations.
I started out my radio career at WICN 90.5 fm in 1980 when they were located on Grove Street. They moved to Chatham Street and now are found on Portland Street in the Printers Building. They are Worcesters NPR affiliate.

WCUW 91.3 fm started out in the basement of Sanford Hall at Clark University and now are independent of that college and are located in the Main South section of the city.
The little station that keeps on chugging along has undergone major upgrades in the past couple of years and shows no signs of slowing down today.






This old board is exactly like the one used at WICN back in 1980.

Worcester Radio Part 1

Starting a tour of the radio stations that supply the City of Worcester with news and entertainment. I grew up when radio was king, the oldies of today were the popular hits of the day. As a teenager I would wander in and out of the stations when most were in the downtown area. WORC, WAAB, WAAF, and WNEB were the top of the heap. Never got in to WTAG back then, but thanks to Chris Sinacola of the Telegram and Gazette, I was able to look at what was once the studios on Franklin Street.













Recently the Worcester Telegram and Gazette announced that the building they have been in since 1920 has been sold. They plan to stay somewhere downtown, but here is a look at the Newsroom where many reporters worked to give Worcester the latest news. The end of another era of the City.

Ben Franklin Print Shop

While in Philadelphia I came across the print shop set up in Old City section to represent how things were back when Franklin lived there. I have worked as printer for over 30 years, so I had to pay it a visit.
